Been looking at some wave discs, but those will set me back around 500 Euro's. That's simply too steep for me.
Any ideas for a cheap set of (decent....) front brake discs???????

Seems the front brake discs on my Thou are nearing the end of their live. So I'm up for a set of new-uns.

In my experience you get what you pay for,i am not a lover of aftermarket disks either, the manufacturers spend millions on getting things right and i very very
rareley advise going away from this.
Get Yamaha disks and especially their own pads, yes many will tell you they have this and that and it works for them, but seeing as you have had the bike from new if you honestly say you can get better than original equipment then do it,if you cant stick with original equipment, plus they are a known content and YOU knowhow long they last. If you want a price for original equipment then send me an email and i will see what i can do.

Glynblue2 wrote:May be true, but IMO the OEM discs are made by Nissin. I found a set of Nissin discs for the Thou for about 250. Don't know if they're identical to the OEM ones. Then again, if those Yammie discs are as expensive as I was led to believe, who cares.......? |

Would you like me to price up some for you,in my opinion what cost is your life?I can bet if they are not original equipment they will not be as thoroughly
tested as the originals are.

Did some checking myself.
As it turns out the OEM discs are cheaper than most aftermarket discs, about 150 Euro's per disc. Ordered a set, along with new brakepads and some other stuff. |

NIce one Jan,strange that isnt it how people think the originals are dearer than after market stuff only to find theyre not.

No apologies needed Glynne. Thanks for the offer anyway. I just felt those discs needed replacing asap.
An ex-copper who is now the owner of a bike shop did some checking for me. I was pretty amazed to learn that the OEM discs were in fact cheaper than most aftermarket discs. As the old ones lasted me about 70.000 km's and I'm not in the market for blingbling wavediscs, that seems like a decent enough offer. |

It always seems strange to me that people pay silly prices for aftermarket goods only to find that they have saved nothing,in fact in most cases its cost them
more.
Glad you're sorted though....

Picked up the discs yesterday. The man selling them is an ex-copper. As it turned out he was more addicted to bike-racing than being a cop..... Rode in a team
at the ONK with Mile Pajic, a wellknown rider over here. Too bad he's into the wrong brand of bike, something vomitgreen, I gather......
He's now a fulltime mechanic, as well as a part time racing instructor. Some interesting stories....... |

Glynne, the guy said not to bother with any Loctite whilst fitting those discs. He claims there's no need to and the Loctite messes up the torque settings
when fastening the bolts.
Any ideas on that? |
|||
Glynblue2 |

AS i have always said,go with the manufacturers requirements,if my memory serves me right you use Loctite, clean the threads prior to fitting and there should
be no issues, some greases can and do indeed upset the torque settings but as the manufacturers have already done thier work for the best settings then always
follow their recommendations.
If you have the manual their will be all loctite areas and grease areas with recommended greases etc,irf you havent got it then let me know. It's to late to find out that you have'nt used the correct procedures when you hit the brakes and there's nothing there, and i dread to think what might occur if just one of those bolts come undone whilst moving along. There is of course differing loctites for different areas as theres thread lock which is a totally different locking glue compared to others in the range.

You're right. Yammie states that Loctite is to be used. That's what I'll use. The torque number is bound to be based on the use of Loctite.

I can never understand why some people state ,Oh i dont use whats in the manual ,I use this because its better......................yeah right
NOT,manufacturers spend millions getting it right for their products,if these so called I use this because its better guys are that good...........they would
be having to back it up with facts and test figures....plus they would be working for the manufacturers...
OOppss that me on a rant sorry Jan..

Oh hell, sometimes I'm one of those "screw the manual" types. Hey, I'm a bleedin' copper..... we're suppposed to be pigheaded
b@st@rds.....
But NEVER where my safety is concerned, especially when dealing with brakes and the likes. Thanks for the advice m8. |

Hmmmm..... as the weather turned rather nasty and cold I couldn't be @rsed fitting the discs myself. Don't have a dry warm shed such as a certain
greenhouse.... I had the discs fitted, brakepads replaced and the brake pistons cleaned. The bike stops on a dime again.......

Yep, had to leave the bike at home for the past few days. It's friggin' cold which isn't the real problem, but it's been snowing quite a bit.
Oh well, I'm starting to rediscover the comforts of a nice warm car once more......
